Iowa Window Tint Law — What Changed on July 1, 2026
Iowa is not the same as Illinois, and the law changed recently. If you are used to Illinois rules, do not assume they carry over across the river.
- Front side windows must allow at least 50% VLT, as of July 1, 2026 — previously 70%
- Windshield must allow at least 70% VLT, with a non-reflective AS-1 strip permitted at the top
- Back side and rear windows may be any darkness
- If the rear window is tinted, dual side mirrors are require
The July 2026 change is recent, and it is a real loosening — for the first time, Iowa drivers can put meaningful film on their front windows without going dark enough to be illegal.
